(April 14, 2005) - - People who have Celiac Disease are raising a glass to a local brewery. There's finally a beer they can actually drink. In this medical report, Doctor Peter Ostrow shows us how Gluten-free beer is made, and how welcome it is.
Jessie Jankowiak: "I haven't had a beer in two years, and I always liked beer."
Jessie Jankowiak has Celiac Disease. Before she was diagnosed beer really bothered her. Jessie Jankowiak said, "...and I would say, but I only had one beer, and no one would believe me, that's how sick it made me."
Mike Lodico had the same problem: "It bothered my stomach so much, one beer and I would have this bloaty belly, a terrible feeling, so I gave up beer."
Regular beer is made with grains that contain Gluten, which people with Celiac Disease can't tolerate.
"The poor health, the lethargic feeling, the intestinal issues, you feel so much better once you start the diet that in my opinion, its worth not eating wheat."
There's Gluten-free bread, but, until now, there wasn't Gluten-Free beer. Now there's Bard's Tale Beer, made in Buffalo at the Flying Bison Brewery and shipped all over the country. Its made from Sorghum, a Gluten free grain that's usually used for cattle feed, and its good.
"The breads and things that you get, the Gluten Free, the substitute breads, don't add up to what real bread tastes like, and this beer tastes like real beer." Tim Herzog (Flying Bison Brewery) said.
"Its got a nice soft hop bouquet, a German charater to the nose, light body, a crisp clean flavor."
Mike Adler is the brewer who created Bard's Tale Beer said, "Its one of the most rewarding brewing jobs I've ever had. I mean, I've been doing this for almost 15 years all over the world, and I've never had somebody come up to me and thank me for making a beer."
It is good beer, but there's a more important message here. The two patients we just saw suffered for a long time before they discovered they had Celiac Disease.
If your symptoms sound like theirs, and if drinking a beer really bothers you, get checked. Celiac Disease can be diagnosed with a simple blood test.
- Q. So, is there Gluten-free pizza to go with that beer?
- A. There is, but it's not quite the real thing. The beer is good, and its the only one.
