NIH Launches Celiac Disease Awareness Campaign
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced the launch of a campaign to heighten awareness of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. The campaign stems from consensus recommendations of an independent panel of experts convened by the NIH to assess current diagnosis, treatment, and management of the disease.

New Law to Help Sufferers of Gluten Allergy
Some people cannot live without wheat products while others have to. A component of wheat called gluten has been discovered to trigger allergies, even in small amounts. The federal government will require manufacturers to list wheat among other allergens in food packaging.
This radio segment heard on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" helped bring about awareness of Celiac Disease and the new food labeling laws at a national level. Have a listen!

Pediatric Gastroenterologists Release Survey Results on Celiac Disease Awareness
The Children's Digestive Health and Nutrition Foundation (CDHNF) with the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) announced today the findings from a survey of 200 pediatricians, family practitioners, and endocrinologists revealing the lack of understanding about celiac disease (CD) in children. The survey was conducted by CDHNF in partnership with Epocrates, Inc. The survey results supported the clear and urgent need to promote awareness of the individuals at risk, the associated conditions, the proper method of screening for celiac disease, and the necessary step of confirming the diagnosis with a small intestinal mucosal biopsy.
